Basil Thampi is an Indian cricketer. He made his first-class debut for Kerala in the 2014-15 Ranji Trophy on 6 Feb 2015. In February 2017 Gujrat Lions bought Basil Thampi for the Indian Premier League at the price of 85 Lakhs. In the IPL 2017, Thampi received the “Emerging Player Award”.

In November 2017 he got selected for India’s T20 International Squad for the series against Sri Lanka but he did not play. In Jan 2018 he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2018 IPL auction. A few years ago Basil Thampi was just man with the dream about providing money to his family with a job in the Gulf country. It is a common thing in Kerala.

A heartfelt talk with the club captain and a job in Chemplast ( a cricket nursery in Tamil Nadu) and he dropped his Gulf plan.

The turning point of his career was the IPL 2017 auction. As he can bowl constantly over the speed of 140 KMPH attracted the franchises during the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament. The result was an 85 Lakh bid by Gujrat Lions – a price that turned out to be a bargain by the end of the tournament. Thampi started with a learner and finished as the Lions main bowler with 11 wickets and emerging player award.

 Facts You Should Know About Basil Thampi

Thampi was a net bowler for the Indian team during their four-match test series against Australia in Feb-Mar 2017.

He was born in a lower-middle-class family.

He played a lot of tennis ball cricket before taking up the game professionally. He has credited his tennis ball experience in helping him to learn how to bowl those Yorkers.

The 23-year-old had the fortune of training at the MRF Pace Academy in Chennai and impressed the coach Glenn McGrath, the former Australian legend. McGrath advised the youngster to never compromise on his natural talent of bowling fast.

Basil played club cricket for Globetrotters in Chennai where he was spotted by Tinu Yohannan. He took him to the Chemplast Sanmar club where he bowled Murali Vijay, S Badrinath, and Dinesh Karthik. After that, he was signed up for the club cricket.
